Turner Falls is a day park for almost everyone who visits. Gates open, gates close, everybody drives back down I-35. Staying inside the park means you get the second version of it — the one with no line at the falls and no headlights on the road.

The park gates close to day visitors in the evening. As a guest staying inside the park, you keep access after they do.

Why this one

A brand-new build in a park full of old cabins

Turner Falls has had cabins in it for a hundred years, and it shows. This one went up from scratch, with the things you actually notice at eleven at night.

You can't hear the park, and you can't hear each other

Closed-cell foam insulation through the walls and roof. It keeps road noise and creek-side campground noise outside, and it keeps the loft from hearing the kitchen. In a cabin this size, that's the difference between everyone sleeping and nobody sleeping.

The firepit terrace

Built into the mountain, not bolted onto the yard

A flagstone circle set into the slope behind the cabin, with a dry-stacked rock wall and a bench carved back into the hillside. There's a smokeless firepit in the middle and a park-style charcoal grill at the edge of it, and flagstone paths running down to the cabin steps and up from the parking area.

Stream music to the outdoor speakers from your phone. It's the part of the property guests end up spending the evening on.

160 square feet of outside, without the bugs

Elevated, fully screened, and facing the water. Seating for seven, two ceiling fans for the Oklahoma summer, two electric heaters for the shoulder months, and its own speaker zone. Most of the year it works as the biggest room in the cabin.

Fourteen by fourteen, with a 65-inch TV, blackout blinds, a ceiling fan, a large dresser and a hanging rack. There's a proper desk and office chair in the corner if someone has to work.

The loft

A queen bed and a super-queen sofa bed under the vault, plus a 75-inch TV and seating for eight. It has its own heat and air unit, so the kids can set it however they want.

Fifteen hundred acres, and you're in them

What's outside the door

The falls, three caves, a 1930s rock castle up the hill, and the Blue Hole swimming pool on Honey Creek. There's also a trail out to Cross Bar Ranch, 6,500 acres of off-road park. Beyond the gates: fried pies, an Amish country store and a chocolate factory, all inside fifteen minutes.

Sean & Trish

Why there's a cabin here at all

Sean's grandfather bought a cabin in this park in the 1930s and remodeled it in the early eighties. Sean spent a good part of his childhood in it — in the creek, up at the castle, out on the trails nobody had marked yet.

When he and Trish had sons of their own, they brought them back here a few times a year to do the same things. Honey Creek Haven got built to hand that on: the same park, the same water, with a cabin that's easier to spend a weekend in than the one he grew up in.
